Whats going on with Nokia ? Tune in on the 17th November to find out. #Nokia

Last September Barry French Executive Vice President, Marketing and Corporate Affairs at NOKIA  wrote a post and here is what it said, which we covered back on the same day..

Basically it was in response as to what was going around, the situation has not changed much since but we have some idea of some things going forward..

Some of today’s press reports related to rumours about Microsoft dropping the Nokia brand have declared the death of the Nokia brand.  But, to paraphrase Mark Twain, “reports of our death are an exaggeration.”  Yes, we have sold our mobile phone business to Microsoft.  But the Nokia of today is financially robust and has moved from weakness to strength. We have one of the world’s best telecom infrastructure businesses, a global leader in the mapping and location business, a stellar intellectual property portfolio and some of the finest innovation capabilities of any company anywhere.  Remember, Nokia started almost 150 years ago with just one paper mill. Over time we have repeatedly and successfully reinvented ourselves.  We may not be the same Nokia of several years ago, but we are here, we are strong, and our brand is very much still alive. Not to mention kicking!

So this is from the horses mouth as the saying goes, but recently we have seen some messages popping up here and there such as below..

So what could the news be? One thing is for sure lots want to know as we do,stay tuned and remember the date. 17th Novemeber 2014.

#Straw for Windows Phone. Poll your friends and followers with pictures or text. by @jimboireland. #Apps

There is many apps out there today on Android and iOS on how people can help each other decide on things be it what to wear eat drink or perhaps buy in a store, now there is an app for Windows Phone that can assist you which works via photos or sms.

The App is called Staw which is in Beta stage for now.

The good thing about this app is you can sign in more than one way,you can sign in with Twitter,Facebook,Google,LinkedIn or indeed your Microsoft account.

You are then brought to the screen which will give you options and then you have further options to share on several social media platforms or with sms.You can then select the duration of the poll when done.

Nokia Lumia 735 review,A mid tier handset that punches above it’s weight. by @jimboireland . #Microsoft #Nokia

Nokia Lumia 735 review,A mid tier handset that punches above it’s weight. by @jimboireland . #Microsoft #Nokia

The Lumia 735 is one of the latest handsets that Microsoft have under their wing and still holds its traditional striking colours that make them stand out form other devices even though this maybe just aesthetically pleasing for some as opposed to the boring black which is still abundant with phones today.

Design and construction.

735 VS 720

735 VS 720

The 735 is the upgrade to the 720 if you will though if still felt somewhat cheaper than the 720 which was reviewed over HERE

To some this is a good choice as the back cover is removeable so we can replace the battery and also we have SD expansion which is really needed anyway been a 1GB RAM device with 8GB of internal storage which is fine for the average user but not everyone, the 735 can take up to 128GB via sd which is pretty good and lets not forget we also have ONE DRIVE too so there is plenty of space in the long run, cloud storage is not for everyone even today but its slowly catching on and quite handy, myself is not a huge fan of the cloud but im warming towards it now and actually use it.

The 735 fits nicely in hand with one handed use been no prooblem at all, with its 4.7 inch display HD Amoled CBD its a breeze to use one handed without thinking the phone is too big and its not slippy and you do not get that fear of dropping it,although these things do happen it part and parcel of using a phone, due to the volume keys and power keys been on the one side it makes it so much better and for me this is the best option as opposed to having buttons on both sides of devices today.

Unboxing and walkaround of the Lumia 735 and comparsion to the 720.

Camera,front and rear.

Taken with Lumia Selfie

Well selfie fans rejoice, for me no i am not one,ok yeah i may have to take one or two for the sake of it i just despise selfies,my opinion so some will agree or disagree and i have no issues with that, the 735 is aimed at the selfie lovers, plenty of them about as we all know and yes it does the job quite well giving great results, the front facing camera is 5MP and on board the 735 is the lumia selfie app.

WP_20141027_09_32_52_Pro

The App works quite well and has some great image editing software built in which for some will be a delight to brush up the photos to another level,as always with nokia devices the camera always has been great and with the 735 and its 6.7 MP rear camera the photos are crsip and clear and of course with the nokia camera app its certainly safe to say we get good quality photos.Again im not one of these that spend all day taking photos or everything that moves and post food or dinner snaps on Instagram nor try to glamourise myself with me standing there with a cheap smile, i take lots of family photos and the 735 surpassed in every manner here as regards to quality. The only downlside really is the lack of a phsyical camera button on the 735 but its not a huge element for me but maybe a dealbreaker for others.

WP_20141027_09_52_38_Pro

The 735 has a 6.7 MP, Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, LED flash,1080p@30fps and with geotagging and face detection, while the front with a 5MP camera that also has 1080p.

Gaming.

Gaming has not really interested me so much in this day and age, back in the symbian days i was fond of my mobile games and now not so much but gaming is quite good on the 735 i have tried a few and still the odd time have a look and see what is on offer,my interests in gaming would be mainly golfing games or a game of temple run,i get bored after 5 mins same as i would on my Xbox or PS4 ,Some games where slow to load but this is expected and normal. The display and graphics on the 735 are quite nice, crisp and clear.

Overall the 735 is a great phone for the cost which is €289 to buy direct from the MS store and it has wireless charging which is good, the battery life is quite good and should last the average user a full day no problem, but for power users it will not,i was quite happy overall with how the device performed and had not had one issue with lag or any sudden reboots, the phone is robust and we can buy replaceable shells for it so you will not be stuck with the one colour,as it tends to be mostly black here we hope the providers have other colours on offer on release which is expected to be next month..

This phone would be smaller than what my preference is when it comes to handset size but it was a joy to use and i find it worth the money,it does deliver with performance and build quality, sadly the problem here in Ireland is the App selection its very poor and needs to be addressed,i feel that this is halting a faster growth of Windows here in Ireland,we do have third party apps there that can be better than the original versions but in the long run its the localised apps that remain a big problem, given all that i find it a great mid teir device and it will not let you down apart from the app choice, this might vary from person to person regarding the app situation but with the mobile phone been used more by commuters for example online shopping or news feeds for example there is apps there but some sites are still not optimized for mobile the way they should be..

My score would be 8/10 Its a good buy for the money and hopefully pre pay prices will lower the pricepoint even more which will make it a very attractive offer.

The most iconic mobile phone logo is gone forever ? #Nokia, here is your new Lumia branding,by @jimboireland.

The most iconic mobile phone logo is gone forever ? #Nokia, here is your new Lumia branding,by @jimboireland.

Well we all heard the other day with what is happening with Nokia branded devices, something we all knew was going to happen and for many it was a sad day,But things have happened and business must continue but for as far as the name Nokia goes we will never see the NOKIA logo ever again, this for some will hurt and others it will be business as usual but only to see a different name printed or etched into the next line of handsets from Microsoft, the other day i wrote my feelings about it and you can read that over HERE. The Nokia X2,130,730,735 and 830 will be the last to bear the NOKIA LOGO..or will they?

The response was great bar the one idiot who as usual fails to talk to me face to face and indirectly comments, and no doubt will again, but thats how some folk are, however i just laugh at cowards like that and move on,so what have we got in store for the future line up and what will they look like with new branding.

One thing is for sure we will not have a flagship until next year, probably summer and this is an issue for some,we may possibly see some mid tier or low ends announced before then which seem to sell well but high end users are now left waiting in limbo..with other new OEMs now jumping onto the windows platform time is everything for Microsoft so they need to act and act fast and give its customers what they want, albeit Lumia sales are up for 8.8 million to 9.3 million its not enough,Apple sold that amount in one weekend why i am i saying this? Its called perspective. Yes as you know i am an avid NOKIA fan i use all OSs today and there is more than just the Branding to think about here, there is the super staff at Nokia who have been good to bloggers and the public, the staff at connects that put devices into peoples hands to test the staf fbehind conversations and the Nokia Support forum, the list is endless, sadly that list has been cut way too short for my liking by MS.Some will say its business, yes it is but lets think about who gone windows off the ground and tossed them out like an empty can.Yes its business thats true but harsh, but also reality . To note we have been told that nothing will change with what’s left though.

Q&A from Nokia conversations.

Conversations: But does this mean Nokia Lumia smartphones that are currently in the market are obsolete?

Tuula: Of course not! Microsoft continues to sell and support the Nokia Lumia phones that are out in the market, such as the recently announced Lumia 830 and Lumia 730/735. As I said, the Lumia promise that you’ve come to experience and love will remain. We will continue to honor customer warranties and provide world-class care services as before.

Conversations: Will we see any additional Nokia phones from Microsoft?

Tuula: Yes! Microsoft will continue to sell Nokia-branded, entry-level category of phones, such as the Nokia 130. We have licensed the Nokia brand for such devices.

As Tuula mentioned, our online channels are going through some changes and this applies to the Conversations blog, too. In the coming weeks, we will move to our new home at Microsoft. We’ll keep you posted on these changes and hope you can make it to our housewarming party!

Conversations: So when are we going to see the first Microsoft Lumia device?

Tuula: I wouldn’t comment on future product announcements, but what I can say is that that we are looking forward to unveiling a Microsoft Lumia device soon. This is of course a natural progression as all devices that once came from Nokia now come from Microsoft.

And, the Lumia promise of great phone experiences will remain the same as our customers have come to know and love. What’s more, Lumia phones will also showcase the best of Microsoft’s services such as Office, OneDrive, Skype and Bing to help customers with their work and personal lives.

Read the full story over at NOKIA CONVERSATIONS  We spent alot of time there too and have featured on it several times.

Will Nokia reinvent itself someday ? Some think so some not, however this is something to think about..Nokia still remains a very viable company in other areas and they could come back and back with a bang, lets hope so.Roll on 2016 when they can come back.

Farewell to Nokia Lumia and a new start for Microsoft Lumia. My thoughts by @jimboireland #Nokia

Farewell to Nokia Lumia and a new start for Microsoft Lumia. My thoughts by @jimboireland #Nokia

Today we learned something we already knew what was coming a long time but it was slapped down for all to see,the final nail in the coffin and perhaps a reality check for some, like it or not we will no longer see the famous NOKIA badge on any devices, the name that once ruled the mobile industry has been taken away by good oul Microsoft not only that even Apps are now losing the NOKIA name and been replaced with good oul Microsoft.

nokia france facebook

Ok so everyone knows me here,i’m Jim,A long standing Nokia supporter for 20 years, people ask does it hurt of todays final blow and to be honest yes it does but going forward its business it has to be accepted like it or not but for the millions of fans around the world its a sad day but lets not forget its not only about the brand.

Microsoft shed NOKIA staff by the truckload, the staff that brought Windows Phone to life,Windows was going nowhere until Nokia decided to go down that road all the way back when the Lumia 800 was born.Given it took a while to take off and massive money was spent in marketing some felt why on earth did they go Windows and not Android, this argument will always remain a debatable issue and the finger will always point to somebody, even today people say Nokia should have took the Android route, maybe they are right maybe they are wrong but for now its not going to change,Nokia and its staff brought Windows to life over a number of years it had a slow start but then steadily grew, today its still growing but it would be nowhere near where it is now only for the good folk at Nokia who were tossed out like an empty can,men and women with families, regardless this is one thing i will never forgive MS for..

It is business i know  but as many see  MS was out to destroy Nokia, doing a good job so far,MS had not got the capabilities nor the hardware Nokia had to bring the Windows OS into  people hands,Windows was around on devices for some time and never shifted at all not until Nokia came along. The 800 was a nice phone but only for Nokia and the design team they made WP attractive better handsets came along then things moved quickly. With the 1020 for example, its design, the hardware and how others tried to compete and all failed the 1020 still remains the camera king in the mobile world.

As it stands Windows phone has not a great market share, nothing compared to the good old symbian days, even for now people still think symbian rocks, well it does not these people need to wake up,technology has a cycle the cycle has been well ridden out now for symbian.Been honest it took me 2 years to move from Symbian when Android came along and it took me almost a year to even get to like windows with the 800 but i then said ok move on or get locked in the past like some are today, everyone has their own opinion on what OS they prefer they are entitled to it,but realistically speaking Symbian is finished get over it,kind of like todays news the NOKIA brand is gone and get over it. Call me a hypocrite if you like but  i aint one to sit on the fence and feel sorry for myself this is 2014 this is Technology this is the world we live in..I have to accept it like everyone else will. Thing is i have i’ve moved on too i use many brands today and moved on from confining myself to Nokia as the interest grew on me what the competition had to offer.

My heart will always be with Nokia as a brand,a device with Microsoft Lumia wrote on it,hmmmm yeah well it just wont feel the same, agree or disagree, weighing in on what has happened over the last 2 years it leaves a very divided community, even for the hard core Nokia fans many have left and chose another brand, some have stayed and are hoping for change but will Microsoft give the people what they want going forward? Some say yes some say no,i say i’m optimistic and remain hopeful that MS serve the goods, they really need to up their game right now and start rolling out updates quicker, rethinking productivity rethinking marketing, rethinking launch plans, and if i’m going to be blunt think like Samsung and Apple, announce a phone this week, have it in peoples hands no later than a month and make devices globally available not sticking to the US and certain regions..

What is happening next,ok well the last remaining devices will be the last devices with Nokia on them,so what is left to see,the Nokia 130,the 730,735 and 830 after this is kaput. Oh and not forgetting the Nokia X2 which i still ask myself  WHY? A gateway to the MS eco system……… Need i say no more and nor do i disagree why MS killed this so quickly either, its a nice phone i was lucky to obtain one and will now remain in a collection i have which stands near 180 Nokia Devices.

Packaging

Packaging

We still do not know what exactly what we will see on the phones be it LUMIA or MICROSOFT LUMIA that remains to be seen, already we have seem some rebranding around the world as regards to the websites, our own here has been redirected to microsoft mobile it changed some time back ,twitter feeds and facebook pages will now slowly change over now over the coming weeks..

Can Microsoft keep the current users happy going forward? This remains to be seen, market share is growing windows phone is attractive, live tiles are better than static tiles, but limitations apply still, same as iOS some say ok think of the next device announcement from MS as a NOKIA inside it,will the devices be aesthetically pleasing, will they still provide what the consumer wants,to date its up in the air, yeah i still use Windows phone and Android and recently took the plunge to iOS which to be quite honest i think is very much locked down,it looks well but for me does not tick all the boxes that is my opinion and i am entitled to it same as others would say the same about Android or Windows. And yes Windows has its problems just like Android does so i am not being biased.

Nokia still exists though as a company just to finalise, they still have network and mapping  very much alive and doing well so who knows what the future holds.

So over to you now, what are your thoughts tell us below and i will leave you with a gallery of some of the devices i own i have not got all day to be sitting here taking photos as much as i would love to. So are you a Nokia fan or a Microsoft fan, thats the burning question…I use a Nokia Lumia 735/930 and other device’s today does it make me an MS fan? You decide..
What happens now with NokiaNewsIreland.com, We have more to do before we fully port over to our sister site Techbuzzireland.com. All things technology will be covered there including MS products.

Thanks.
